The Government of Victoria in Australia has identified a preferred site for the construction of the new City of Whittlesea Community Hospital.

It will be built at a block of land at 1410 Plenty Road, Mernda.

The government plans to invest $492m (A$675m) for delivering ten community hospitals across major growth areas in the state.

Upon completion of the City of Whittlesea Community Hospital, people living in Melbourne’s outer north will have better access to the health services they need closer to their homes.

The new hospital will offer a wide range of integrated community health and specialist services and will be operated by Northern Health.

Additionally, the new health care facility is expected to reduce pressure from the neighbouring hospitals including Northern Hospital in Epping and allow it to focus on critical care and acute health issues and more complex surgeries and procedures.

Construction works for the new facility are expected to begin next year, with completion anticipated in 2024.

The hospital will be delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA). The identified land is currently commercially owned and is in the process of being acquired.

Victoria Minister for Health Martin Foley said: “We’re getting on with delivering the largest pipeline of health projects in Victoria’s history, so Victorians can access the care and services they need, when they need them.”

The government is investing in health services in the state’s outer north with $239,647 (A$328,300) in funding from the new $145m (A$200m) Metropolitan Health Infrastructure Fund (MHIF), which has been allocated for master planning across DPV Health’s 18 sites in the City of Whittlesea.
