Virginia Hospital Center, located in Arlington, Virginia, US, has awarded an additional expansion contract to construction and development company Skanska.

The $96m contract involves site work, a new outpatient pavilion and parking garage.

As part of the expansion project, a new six-storey outpatient facility will include rooms for physical therapy examination and treatment, radiology and imaging suites, examination clinics and six operating rooms.

Meanwhile, the parking garage will include three levels below grade and six levels above grade meant to accommodate a total of 1,700 cars.

Virginia Hospital Center is a 394-bed non-profit, teaching facility that delivers healthcare services, including cardiac surgery, inpatient rehabilitation and emergency services. It is part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network in the US.

Construction for the expansion project was commenced in June last year and is scheduled to complete in December 2022.

Earlier this month, Skanska signed a $64.8m contract with the New York City Health and Hospital to refurbish the North Central Bronx Hospital situated in Bronx, New York, US.

The 71,000ft2 renovation project covers the addition of 120 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, along with support space for the executive administration staff at the existing hospital.

Construction for this renovation started in April this year and completion of ICU beds was accelerated to May this year. Meanwhile, final project is expected to be completed in September this year.

In October last year, Skanska received a contract worth SEK1.1bn ($114.09m) to build a new Högsbo specialist hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden.
