Construction and equipment group Interserve has started work on a new £14.5m Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services inpatient unit in West Yorkshire, UK.

The new facility is a joint venture between Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust (LCH) and Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LYPFT). It is being constructed on a site in Armley, Leeds which formerly housed St Mary’s Hospital.

Enabling works, including demolition of some existing buildings, have been underway at the site since February this year and work on the new facility has now begun. The mental health unit is scheduled to open from September next year.

As well as 22 inpatient beds, the new facility will feature improvements and facilities for children and young people such as therapeutic areas, multi-purpose activity room, educational facilities and a family visiting room, among others.

The unit is also set to include a separate space for young people in urgent need of care to undergo a mental health assessment in order to ensure the most appropriate support, noted Interserve.

Interserve Construction regional director Paul Ellenor said: “As a supporter of Mental Health Awareness Week, Interserve is pleased to be working with our NHS partners to deliver this new mental health care facility in West Yorkshire.
