VHA, a national healthcare network in the US, has announced that 54 hospitals have reduced their costs by more than $35m following an initiative to reduce the incidence of hospital-acquired infections.
The initiative, established in late 2007, aimed to reduce MRSA infections within three years.
The hospitals reduced their collective MRSA infection rate by 44% by the end of 2010, saving an estimated $35.4m in additional treatment costs.
As a part of the initiative, the hospitals also adapted practices to reduce urinary tract infections, surgical infections, bloodstream infections and ventilator-associated pneumonia.
The hospitals also worked to improve hand washing, isolation policies and environmental cleaning procedures; conducted MRSA screenings; and required protective equipment to be worn whenever someone entered an infected patient’s room.
