The provincial government of British Columbia, Canada, has launched a C$512m ($522m) expansion of a local hospital.

The project to upgrade Surrey Memorial Hospital will include an eight-storey critical care tower, a substantially larger emergency department, a larger adult intensive care unit, a perinatal department for high-risk newborns and an expanded clinical academic campus.

As part of the expansion, the existing hospital will be renovated, including an expanded family birthing unit, a dedicated maternity operating room and an expanded pharmacy and sterile processing unit.

The emergency department will be completed in 2013, while the critical care tower will open to patients in 2014.

Integrated Team Solutions, a subsidiary of EllisDon, has entered into an agreement to design, build, finance and maintain the new critical care tower and emergency department over a period of 30 years.
