The provincial government of Manitoba, Canada, is to invest more than $20m to expand, renovate and modernise the emergency department of Grace General Hospital in Winnipeg.

The expansion will add a new triage area, a rapid-assessment zone in the waiting room and enlarge the minor-treatment area, which will improve the patient flow.

The government is also providing $1.5m to boost the number of healthcare professionals starting this spring to address the increasing number of emergency department visits.

Winnipeg Regional Health Authority president and CEO Arlene Wilgosh said that the new space will allow significant improvements in infection control and patient privacy, as well as improved overall visibility for monitoring patients.

“We look forward to seeing faster emergency department care and improved patient outcomes with these upgrades,” Wilgosh added.
