The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced more than $34m in additional Affordable Care Act funding for public health improvement programmes in the country.
CDC director Thomas Frieden said that the additional funds will enable the nation’s public health departments to work more effectively and efficiently to detect and respond to outbreaks, disasters and other public health problems.
“This initiative will strengthen the nation’s public health system, and our ability to improve the health and well being of all Americans,” Frieden said.
In 2010, the Affordable Care Act provided $42.5m to fund 76 state, tribal, local and territorial health departments or other agents that act on their behalf, in order to improve public health in the US.
The CDC is a US federal agency under the Department of Health and Human Services.
