Obesity and alcohol misuse are costing the NHS in Wales more than £140m each year, according to research conducted by Swansea University.

The research, commissioned by the Welsh Assembly Government, revealed that obesity is costing the NHS in Wales £73m each year, while excessive alcohol consumption is at between £69.9m and £73.3m each year.

The cost represents between £25 and £29 a person in Wales for obesity and about £24 per person for alcohol.

The researchers suggested that excessive drinking and obesity needs to be tackled in a cost-effective way, given that it is a time of pressure on Welsh NHS budgets.

The study analysed factors associated with alcohol misuse and obesity such as hospital admissions, GP consultations and prescription costs.
