The Moses H Cone Memorial Hospital in North Carolina, US, has broken ground the largest expansion in its history.

The $200m, six-storey North Tower will add 96 private patient rooms, which are designed to enhance patient recovery and safety.

The patient rooms and family and visitor areas will feature more natural light, temperature and lighting controls, a noise-reducing design and family zones with daybeds.

The tower will also contain 16 modern operating rooms and an emergency department.

The project is scheduled for completion in June 2013, after which 83,000ft² of the existing hospital space will be renovated.
