The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has initiated a national programme to address healthcare-acquired conditions in the US.

‘Partnership for Patients: Better Care, Lower Costs’ will see the CDC work with federal, state and local public health and healthcare partners to perform rapid field investigations, awareness programmes and cutting edge infection prevention research.

CDC director Thomas Frieden said the initiative will help protect patients and ensure that they live longer while reducing healthcare costs.

Healthcare-acquired conditions such as infections, pressure ulcers and blood clots are a burden on the healthcare system, and affect one in 20 patients.
