Eye exams are generally the first to detect chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, a study by the Human Capital Management Services Group (HCMS) has revealed.

The study, which was commissioned by the nation’s largest eyecare provider VSP Vision Care Eye Health, found that eye doctors detected signs of the chronic conditions before any other healthcare provider.

Eye specialists in the 212,000-member study detected 65% of high cholesterol patients, 20% of members with diabetes and 30% with hypertension.

VSP Vision Care Eye Health Management director, Susan Egbert, said that annual eye exams play a critical role in identifying the signs of chronic diseases at early stages.
