Given Imaging has announced the benefits of using the Bravo wireless pH monitoring system to analyse pH levels in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
The system uses a capsule to collect and transmit pH data via radio-frequency telemetry to an external, pager-sized receiver that is worn by the patient.
The study included 163 patients and showed that increasing the duration of reflux studies greatly improved the consistency of GERD diagnosis based on pH monitoring.
The system also minimises the throat and nasal discomfort associated with conventional catheter-based pH systems, and provides physicians with additional data needed for an accurate GERD assessment.
The risks seen with the use of Bravo system include premature detachment, discomfort, failure to detach, tears in the mucosa and bleeding.
