Mauna Kea has announced that the cellular-level visualisation of the lining of the bile and pancreatic ducts with its Cellvizio probe-based confocal laser endomicroscopy (pCLE) system and CholangioFlex miniprobe can improve the detection of bilio-pancreatic cancer in patients with indeterminate bilio-pancreatic strictures.

The multi-centre, longitudinal registry study of pCLE enrolled 102 patients with indeterminate strictures.

The results revealed that pCLE’s ability to accurately predict disease was 98%, while sensitivity of tissue sampling was 45%.

Adam Slivka, associate chief of the Division of Gastroenterology Hepatology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, noted that standard pathology missed more than half of cancers at the index procedure.

Mauna KeaTechnologies president and CEO Sacha Loiseau said that the use of pCLE and Cellvizio could give patients accurate diagnosis and treatment.
