Akron Children’s Hospital in Ohio, US, has opened a new 3,000ft² expressive therapy centre.
The $1.8m facility Emily Cooper Welty Expressive Therapy Center will help children to use various forms of art to deal with illness, cope with emotions and find comfort.
The facility, funded by various community donations, contains computers designed for disabled children; dedicated areas for painting and sculpting; a mirrored dance room; and books, magazines and reference materials.
Haslinger Family Pediatric Palliative Care Center director Sarah said that expressive therapy empowers patients by helping them accept their diagnosis, exert control in an uncontrollable situation, and cope with feelings of fear, depression, isolation and withdrawal.
