Not all healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) are preventable in hospital settings, according to a new report by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

Between one in ten and one in 20 patients in acute hospitals could contract an HCAI, which are impossible to eradicate completely, the report said.

The report said that infected patients should be informed as quickly and directly as possible by a hospital consultant or GP to avoid unnecessary anxiety.
