Hospitals in the US state of Rhode Island (RI) will adopt a standardised protocol for surgical procedures in a bid to cut down potential medical errors and improve communication.

Fourteen hospitals will adopt a common procedure before conducting surgeries, the Hospital Association of Rhode Island said.

A standardised protocol across the state will ensure that the surgeon is responsible for the procedure and communicates with his staff, officials from RI hospitals said.

According to the new protocol, two licensed providers will mark the operation site and use a checklist before surgeries, Forbes reports.
