The UK lags behind other European countries in offering in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment, according to a new survey by the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (Eshre).

The state-funded IVF rate is three times lower than in Denmark and Belgium, offering just 729 IVF treatment cycles per million people, according to the study results published in local newspaper The Herald.

The Assisted Reproductive Technology survey found that Britain, which pioneered the infertility treatment, is the 11th in a list of 13 European countries providing IVF treatment, the newspaper said.
