Construction of a major new children's hospital worth Dhs1bn has begun in Dubai, the government has announced.

The Al Jalilah bint Mohammed bin Rashid Paediatric Hospital 90,000m² facility will have 200 beds, highly qualified doctors and clinical personnel to deliver child healthcare services.

The paediatric facility will be the first dedicated children's hospital in the country and is expected to be complete by 2011.

The hospital will be equipped with cutting-edge high-tech incubators and will offer therapeutic facilities for various conditions, including cancer and kidney diseases.

The foundation stone was formally laid by UAE Vice-President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
