The Australian Government has awarded over A$5m for two infrastructure projects at Geelong Hospital in Victoria.

Of the total amount, A$4.2m will be used for the construction of a critical operating theatre to treat patients waiting for complex surgery, the government said.

A grant of A$460,000 will be used to buy two turbo batch washers and an ENT microscope to help in elective surgeries.

An additional A$500,000 will be used to buy a positron emission tomography scanner with a capacity to scan about 900 patients every year.

Construction of the operating theatres is due in the middle of 2010, the government said.
