The Australian Government has given a A$1m grant to the North Western Regional Hospital in Tasmania for new equipment to reduce elective surgery waiting times.

The hospital, located in Burnie, will purchase day surgery beds, sterilisers and recovery monitors with the funds, the government said.

The grant is part of Stage 2 of the government's Elective Surgery Waiting List Reduction Plan.

The third and final stage of the plan will begin later in 2009 and will include additional funding of up to A$300m to the states and territories, the government said.
