People in the US state of California have been encouraged to receive the vaccine for seasonal influenza, which is now widely available in the state.

California Department of Public Health (CDPH) acting chief deputy director Gil Chavez said the seasonal flu shot and the H1N1 flu shot will be circulating throughout the US this year.

"The seasonal flu shot, however, will not protect people from the H1N1 flu virus, also known as swine flu," Chavez said.

Local health departments will receive 684,000 doses of seasonal flu vaccine from the CDPH for use at public flu vaccine clinics.
