National Health Service (NHS) Trusts across the UK may not be monitoring the performance of out-of-hours GP services effectively and failing to spot patient safety concerns, according to a new report.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) reviewed five Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) that offer out-of-hours services and found that trusts failed to monitor the quality of care in a consistent manner, missing out on potential problems and indications of poor care.

PCTs should check the quality of clinical decisions and call handling, the adequacy of staffing, shifts covered by locum doctors and the training they receive, the report said.
