The Australian Government is providing funds of $10.8m (AU$12.2m) to a primary school mental health promotion project.

The KidsMatter Primary initiative aims to promote mental health, prevent mental illness and initiate early intervention among primary school children, the government said.

The funding will allow the initial implementation of the project at 101 schools across Australia.

The government will provide additional funds of AU$6.5m ($5.7m) over three years to develop a second KidsMatter project focused on the early childhood sector.
