The British Medical Association (BMA) has condemned Chancellor Alistair Darling’s proposal to freeze the pay of GPs and National Health Service (NHS) managers.

Darling has called on salary review bodies to freeze the pay of 40,000 senior public servants, including senior NHS managers and GPs, in a bid to reduce UK debt.

The BMA said that penalising all doctors, and in particular singling out GPs for a total pay freeze, is completely the wrong move and could prove counterproductive.

Nurses and those working in the Scottish health department would not be affected by any pay freeze.
