The $4.4m (€3m) Bwaila Maternity Hospital has opened in Malawi to provide better healthcare services to expectant mothers in the region.

The 100-bed maternity hospital, funded by Irish charity The Rose Project, will also help pregnant HIV positive women.

About 20% of expectant mothers in the region being admitted are HIV positive but are not tested for the disease because of insufficient clinical staff, overcrowding and poor facilities, The Rose Project said.

The new hospital replaces an old facility which was struggling to help deliver 12,000 babies each year, the charity said.
