The number of hospital admissions for obesity in England has increased by 60% in the past year and by 360% compared to five years ago, according to latest figures.

The NHS Information Centre statistics show that there were 8,085 admissions in England for obesity in 2008–09, compared to 5,056 in 2007–08 and 1,746 in 2003–04.

The steep rise in hospital admissions reflects how overweight people are increasingly resorting to treatments such as bariatric surgery and the demands it is placing on limited NHS resources, officials said.
