The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched an initiative in an effort to reduce preventable harm from inappropriate medication use.

The Safe Use Initiative aims to prevent unnecessary injuries from avoidable medication misuse, errors and other problems by developing targeted solutions to reduce these injuries.

Incomplete access to information about a drug, a patient or the patient's condition and unintentional misuse of medications, medication abuse and attempts at self-harm are the various preventable sources of injury.

The FDA will collaborate with healthcare professionals and other stakeholders to develop a list of specific problems and cross-sector interventions to reduce such injuries.
