New software that uses a range of mathematical algorithms can predict patient numbers days in advance, allowing hospitals to allocate operating theatres, roster staff and use bed space efficiently.
The software, developed by New Zealand-based technology company Emendo allows hospitals to extract the most out of existing facilities, according to www.nzherald.co.nz.
Its flagship product, CapPlan, is capable of connecting primary healthcare players to major regional hospitals in an effort to optimise the use of the facilities and resources.
Co-founder Nick Burns said the system was being connected to hospitals in New Zealand.
"We have algorithms running over all the data looking for patterns, which then apply forecasts going forward," he said.
The software can take into account the arrival of the winter flu season or a major civil defence emergency.
