The groundbreaking of a new 246-bed psychiatric hospital in Staunton, US, has taken place adjacent to the Western State Hospital.

The new Western State Hospital replacement facility, to be constructed on a 66-acre site, will feature improvements to operate more efficiently and offer modern, person-centred therapy to individuals with mental illness.

The state will pay $110m and Staunton will pay $15m to construct the hospital, which is expected to begin operations in 2013.
