An investigation is underway into 11 NHS foundation hospitals by UK regulator Monitor after action was taken against two Essex-based hospitals for poor performance.

A task force will be sent to hospitals to track the amount of improvement, particularly in the accident and emergency department.

Health secretary Andy Burnham has ordered the Care Quality Commission to investigate if any other hospitals have similar problems.
