NHS Oldham in the UK has signed an outsourcing deal with technology firm Computacenter for it to provide information technology (IT) infrastructure to reduce costs and improve service.

Under the four-year contract, Computacenter will improve the IT service and reduce costs, saving time and money that can be spent on enhancing patient care, the company said.

The firm will also run an IT transformation project to show how the better use of IT can deliver an improved healthcare service.

Computacenter Public Sector director Chris Price said that with pressure now to find at least £15bn in savings across the NHS by 2014, it is crucial primary care trusts look to optimise their IT processes and take advantage of economies of scale by outsourcing IT provision.

“This will enable them to reduce costs significantly and spend more time with patients,” Price said.

NHS Oldham provides healthcare service to 227,000 people in the area.
