The largest new breast cancer treatment centre in the Republic of Ireland has opened at Cork University Hospital.

Opened under the National Cancer Control Programme, the centre is expected to treat more than 10,000 patients each year and diagnose 520.

The centre will have five consultant breast surgeons, four consultant radiologists and five permenantly based in the facility.

The unit is further supported by physiotherapy, occupational therapy and social work teams.

The centre amalgamates breast cancer services from various facilities including Mercy University Hospital and Kerry General Hospital.
