SSM St Joseph Health Center in the US state of Missouri has opened a new $4.6m intensive care unit (ICU).

The new ICU has 14 private rooms with an additional five step-down beds that are ICU compatible.

The unit also features new monitoring systems for each room, beds positioned for 360° patient access and large, accessible restrooms in each room.

In addition, the unit has computers outside each patient room for better monitoring and charting, and direct access from the ICU family and visitor waiting area.

The facility is part of the hospital's $27.3m improvement plan.

The next phase of the improvement scheme is the renovation and redesign of the hospital's emergency department and is expected to begin on 18 January.
