Researchers at the University of Bologna in Italy have developed a new wireless sensor that can monitor and help prevent falls in patients.
The device uses gyroscopes and accelerometers to monitor, detect and prevent a patient from falling.
When a patient falls over, the device rings an alarm and sends an alert to the emergency services, doctors or relatives using SMS and email.
The software that can also detect where the person has been unable to get up, according to ehealtheurope.net.
The system is being piloted on Parkinson's disease sufferers at three different sites in the Netherlands, Germany and Israel.
