The number of patients seeking legal claims after paying for weight-loss surgery has increased sharply over the last two years, according to figures gathered by the Medical Defence Union (MDU).

In the last two years, 21 medical negligence claims involving bariatric surgery in private hospitals have been reported to the MDU compared to just 14 from 2003 to 2008, reports The Times.

According to MDU analysis, the reasons for the growing number of claims include post-operative infection, gastric bands slipping or leaking, delays in diagnosing these problems and failure to get patients’ consent.

The MDU analysis also found that many cases involved problems related to the dietary regime and complaints of inadequate information on the surgery prior to treatment.
