Rebuilding hospitals destroyed during the 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Chile in February will cost $3.6bn, according to the country’s health minister Alvaro Erazo.

“Eleven of our hospitals are affected, of which seven are no longer operational because their structures have been damaged and must therefore be rebuilt,” Erazo said.

The reconstruction work on hospitals is estimated to take at least three years and during this period, hospitals will be installed in the affected areas of central and southern Chile.

During the reconstruction period, 15 modular hospitals will be set up in places where hospitals with more than 400 beds were damaged, authorities said.

The vaccination of children with hepatitis A is now being carried out at shelters in the towns hit hardest by the earthquake.
