Royal Marsden Hospital in the UK has installed a tumour tracking system to provide accurate, precise, real-time tumour tracking for patients undergoing external beam radiation therapy for prostate cancer.

Calypso Medical Technologies' Calypso system utilises miniature implanted beacon transponders to provide precise, continuous information on the location of the tumour during external beam radiation therapy.

The Calypso System also provides real-time tumour position information, allowing physicians to deliver radiation directly to the tumour while sparing the surrounding healthy organs from exposure.

The Calypso System can also be applied to researching additional body sites such as the lung, where tumour motion makes treatment very challenging.

The Calypso System enabled planning target volume margin reduction, which resulted in improved outcomes for patients, a recent clinical study said.
