Boston hospital uses OmniGuide BeamPath laser system to treat uterine fibroids

Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Boston, Massachusetts, US, has used the OmniGuide BeamPath laser system in robot-assisted surgery to treat a patient suffering from uterine fibroids.

The live surgery was performed for the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).

Brigham and Women’s Hospital Center for Infertility and Reproductive Surgery MD Dr. Antonio Gargiulo said the live telesurgery was an opportunity to share the work being done at Brigham and Women’s in treating a painful disease state.

"Patients suffering from uterine fibroids in our practice present with abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain, infertility or recurrent pregnancy loss," Dr. Gargiulo added.

"By means of conservative surgery (removal of the tumours and reconstruction of the uterus) patients can look forward to a resolution of their symptoms and/or to successfully conceive and have a normal pregnancy."

The surgical technique provides minimally invasive access to the uterus and leverages a carbon dioxide laser system to accurately perform uterine incisions facilitating fibroid removal.

The OmniGuide BeamPath ROBOTIC system makes use of a proprietary technology to combine the accuracy of CO2 laser with the robotic surgery platform.
