Sharp HealthCare, a regional healthcare delivery system in San Diego, California, US, has selected the 3M 360 Encompass System to integrate and automate medical records coding, clinical documentation improvement and performance monitoring.
The integrated computer-assisted coding and documentation improvement system will be used across Sharp’s four acute-care hospitals and affiliated medical groups, to monitor outcomes and prepare for the new national healthcare coding standard ICD-10.
Sharp Grossmont Hospital chief financial officer Kari Cornicelli said the accurate coding feature of the 3M technology was the main reason for its selection.
"We’ve been a 3M client for years and trust their coding software to keep us compliant and our reimbursement on target. 3M’s strong consulting program in clinical documentation improvement was the other factor in our decision," Cornicelli added.
With the new technology the healthcare provider expects to achieve better coding productivity, complete documentation for improved coded data, more accurate reimbursement and actionable data for the improvement of patient care processes.
The 3M 360 Encompass System, which will be integrated with the health centre’s Cerner electronic health medical record (EMR), is designed to promote the complete capture of patient severity in physician documentation.
The contract also includes the 3M DRG Assurance Programme for improving documentation specificity and the 3M Ambulatory Revenue Management System for data accuracy monitoring, medical necessity validation and compliance auditing.
The 3M 360 Encompass System, developed on the basis of the 3M Coding and Reimbursement System, includes complete ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding content.
