Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Illinois, has broken ground on its long-awaited campus modernisation project.
The project will enhance patient care with private rooms, better technology and more convenient access to inpatient and outpatient services.
The project will increase the number of licensed beds from 169 to 176, with the additional beds all in the intensive care unit, and will also include eight new operating rooms with increased capacity.
Good Shepherd Hospital president Karen Lambert said that the hospital would not exist without the substantial support of its many friends and neighbours throughout the communities it serves.
"As construction occurs, you’ll see the results of thoughtful input from patients, doctors, associates, families, community groups, architects and engineers," Lambert added.
"Through the devotion and support of Advocate and all of our generous friends, we start building it today."
Clinical services, including radiology, ambulatory care services, cardiovascular and pulmonary testing, and therapies will undergo modernisation under the project.
As part of the project, all non-clinical areas including administration, public/visitor space, circulation, materials management, lobby, simulation laboratory, chapel, community education and conference centre will be modernised.
Additionally, the modernisation encompasses system upgrades, implementing LEED guidelines for improving energy efficiency and achieving EED Silver certification.
More than 100 attendees were present at the groundbreaking, including politicians, donors, administrators, physicians and associates.
The Illinois health facilities planning board approved the certificate of need application for the Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital campus modernisation in June 2012.
Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, a 169-bed acute care hospital with more than 700 physicians representing 50 medical specialities, is part of Advocate Health Care, the largest health system in Illinois.
