The Willis-Knighton Cancer Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, US, has become the first hospital to install the IBA ProteusONE proton therapy room combined with the Philips Ambient Experience platform.

Willis-Knighton will utilise IBA’s ProteusONE single-room compact gantry solution in the treatment of cancer patients.

The Philips Ambient Experience is designed and engineered by Philips Healthcare to promote patient relaxation during proton treatments by allowing patients to add comforting light, sound and images to the treatment room environment before the commencement of the therapy.

IBA chief executive officer Olivier Legrain said the new installation is the first to come to fruition from the Philips-IBA cooperative agreement.

"It is demonstrative of a successful collaboration with Philips in offering highly advanced, patient-centered care, and we are delighted it will be integrated into our new proton system installations," Legrain added.

The $40m project is due to begin treating patients in early 2014.

The Philips Ambient Experience is designed to improve the patient and staff experience by turning an unfriendly environment into a comfortable one, with the patient becoming an active part of the process, according to Philips.

Willis-Knighton Cancer Center spokesperson Dr. Lane Rosen said the soothing and empowering atmosphere will make patients more comfortable, allowing staff to work more efficiently.

"IBA and Philips have been excellent partners, so it made sense to work with them to bring this unique experience to our patients," Dr. Rosen added.
