Saint Anne’s Hospital, a Steward Family Hospital, has broken ground for a new 10,000ft² urgent care centre at Riverside Landing, on Coggeshall Street in New Bedford, that is slated to open in autumn 2014.

The new centre will offer walk-in outpatient care for non-life-threatening conditions when a patient’s primary care physician is not available or when emergency room care is not needed.

The hospital’s new outpatient service will encompass 12 private exam rooms, a diagnostic laboratory, and diagnostic imaging that includes all-digital X-ray, ultrasound, CT scan and ECG services.

It is scheduled to be open seven days a week from noon to midnight and will be staffed by urgent care physicians and other clinicians associated with Hawthorn Medical Associates and Saint Anne’s Hospital.

Saint Anne’s Hospital COO John Jurczyk said: "Urgent care centres provide a prompt and cost-effective alternative to emergency room visits for treatment of illnesses or injuries when a patient’s primary care physician is not available."

Some of the conditions or illnesses that can be treated at an urgent care centre include sore throats, ear infections, sinusitis, cuts and bruises, simple fractures, allergic reactions, asthma, nausea/vomiting, back pain, pneumonia, diarrhea, and upper respiratory infections.

Hawthorn Medical Associates CEO James Gularek said that while urgent care does not replace primary care, and is not a substitute for a hospital emergency room, it does fill a special need.

"Urgent care centres provide a prompt and cost-effective alternative to emergency room visits for treatment of illnesses or injuries when a patient’s primary care physician is not available."

If, for example, a patient develops a routine illness or injury that requires care when the primary care physician’s office is closed, but is not serious enough to require a trip to the emergency room, "urgent care providers can help", noted Gularek.

The hospital has obtained $3.3m financing from Rockland Trust through the New Markets Tax Credit programme, which promotes job creation and economic redevelopment.

The construction of the new centre has been contracted to Charles Construction while the project management was awarded to Dickinson Development and D.W. White.

Rockland Trust first vice president Stephen Hall said that the trust is committed to partnering with the business community.

"This investment supports our vision of building strong relationships with all the communities we serve," Hall added.

Saint Anne’s Hospital is a community hospital with comprehensive inpatient, outpatient and emergency care services, serving adults and children from south-eastern Massachusetts and nearby Rhode Island at its main campus in Fall River and at its community satellites.
