Guadalupe County Hospital in New Mexico, US, is using Medsphere Systems’ OpenVista electronic health record (EHR) to qualify for federal meaningful use funds.

The open source EHR allows the rural facility to pay for the comprehensive health IT platform through federal reimbursement.

The medical facility, which provides adult and paediatric care, received an initial reimbursement of more than $1.5m for meeting Meaningful Use Stage 1 requirements.

"I’m very pleased that Guadalupe can serve as an example to similar facilities – comprehensive health IT is available to all hospitals, not only those with huge endowments in urban areas."

Medsphere president and CEO Irv Lichtenwald said the firm congratulates Guadalupe County Hospital on achieving Meaningful Use and working to improve patient care for the Santa Rosa community.

"Meaningful Use qualification demonstrates the flexibility and affordability of OpenVista at a wide range of hospitals, and it speaks volumes about the team at Guadalupe," Lichtenwald added.

Guadalupe and Medsphere worked together on essential training, workflow redesign and clinical transformation.

Meaningful Use funds will reimburse the hospital for the initial five-year costs of the OpenVista system, which enables improved patient care and clinical processes.

Subsequent to the inclusion of OpenVista upgrades, enhancements and support in Medsphere’s subscription-based pricing model, the hospital expects increased financially manageable health IT operating expenses.

Guadalupe County Hospital CEO Christina Campos said the efforts and support of clinicians and staff ensured the success of the project, and their embrace of OpenVista in the hospital is making a huge difference.

"I’m very pleased that Guadalupe can serve as an example to similar facilities – comprehensive health IT is available to all hospitals, not only those with huge endowments in urban areas," Campos added.
