Bolton NHS Foundation Trust in the UK has implemented Wave Systems’ Safend Encryptor technology for data encryption and secure data management and recovery.
The trust deployed Safend Encryptor over 400 machines across the organisation using Microsoft’s SCCM and found that machines which faced problems with the previous disk encryption software had no issues with the new technology.
Bolton NHS Foundation Trust system and networking technician Alex Fildes said the trust is one of the first to implement the Department of Health’s mobile data encryption mandate, but it wanted to go further and so required encryption technology that would protect sophisticated hardware.
"Safend Encryptor was the best option for us as it required minimal administration, reducing the impact on staff productivity; there was also no need for them to be retrained to use it as it was simple yet secure," Fildes added.
Safend Encryptor, which encrypts data automatically, is a file level encryptor designed to work like disk encryption, yet access to the laptop is only possible by a login name and password identified by the user.
In a recovery situation, the files can be copied by the IT team off the hard drive still encrypted, and then decrypted with the right recovery key.
The technology provides logs and reports on security incidents, encryption status, and administrative actions, and maintains machine performance by avoiding unnecessary encryption and decryption of system or program files.
The new system helps the trust to meet the European Data Protection Regulation, which requires organisations to prove that a device was encrypted at the point at which it was lost or stolen.
Wave Systems EMEA vice president and GM Joseph Souren said, "The public sector is under the spotlight with regards to data encryption, and with the threat of fines under the European Data Protection Regulation, we are increasingly seeing organisations and Trusts, such as Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, require the level of data encryption that Safend Encryptor can offer."
