The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust in the UK has chosen the Kronos SMART workforce management solution for a standardised rostering process that improves time management in the nursing and midwifery departments.

The technology covers e-Rostering, time and attendance, management reporting, electronic staff record (ESR) and payroll integration, and bank management.

The trust has implemented SMART e-Rostering in 25 wards, which includes eight project-leading wards that are integrated with the trust’s payroll system. Pennine Acute Hospitals starting using the SMART bank management solution in July 2012.

"We are seeing huge interest from health boards, trusts and hospitals everywhere as they look for proactive ways to minimise risks to patient safety and services as well as nurture nursing talent and maximise budgets."

Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust project manager, nurse staffing and electronic rostering Geoff Smith said, "The SMART solution from Kronos has had a significant impact across implemented wards enabling increased levels of transparency for all staff and providing real time management information that enables improved utilisation of staffing resources within our organisation."

Another key element of the overall SMART solution is the SMART hospital patient/nurse acuity platform, which provides information on staffing levels and skills mix.

As part of the next phase of the project, SMART e-Rostering, which is designed to ensure quality of staff and continuity of patient care, will be implemented at The Royal Oldham Hospital in October 2012.

Kronos sales director Tristan Spencer said that by optimising human and capital resources, the NHS and other health organisations can empower staff and manage costs, while maintaining a high standard of patient care.

"We are seeing huge interest from health boards, trusts and hospitals everywhere as they look for proactive ways to minimise risks to patient safety and services as well as nurture nursing talent and maximise budgets," Spencer added.

Pennine Acute Hospitals has reported several benefits since deploying SMART, such as increased staff empowerment and engagement, transparent rosters, and accurate management information.
