Greenville Health System (GHS), a not-for-profit healthcare delivery system in South Carolina, has purchased two RIVA fully-automated IV compounding systems from Intelligent Hospital Systems (IH Systems).

RIVA is reportedly the only fully-automated IV compounding system on the market.

RIVA can process individual or batch doses in an ISO Class 5 environment with USP-compliant beyond-use dating.

Additionally, the technology is capable of extending production runs with zero staff intervention.

The two state-of-the-art IV medication preparation systems are anticipated to be installed and in operation in 2014.

Greenville Memorial Medical Campus senior administrator Mike Hanna said that the GHS pharmacy touches virtually every patient, and it must provide every medication dose with the utmost safety and accuracy.

"Greenville Health System is committed to best-in-class clinical service, research and academic instruction, and RIVA will ensure we also have best available technology in an area so critical to patient care and safety," Hanna added.

The RIVA system lowers the cost-per-dose of medication and provides a complete electronic audit trail that identifies and labels every dispensed dose.

Greenville Health System hopes to enhance patient safety, reduce its vulnerability to medication shortages and cut waste by deploying the RIVA pharmacy automation system.

"Greenville Health System is committed to best-in-class clinical service, research and academic instruction, and RIVA will ensure we also have best available technology in an area so critical to patient care and safety."

Since its introduction in 2008, RIVA systems in operation around the world have prepared nearly two million doses safely and accurately.

The safety record has been demonstrated at over 30 RIVA installations by more than 120,000 routine quality control checks that found no contamination in compounds produced by the systems.

IH Systems president and CEO Dr Niels Erik Hansen said that RIVA eliminates cross-contamination and the risk of human error, setting a new standard for patient and medication safety.

"We expect participating hospital systems to experience significant cost savings through increased safety, productivity and efficiency in their pharmacy compounding processes," Hansen added.

Greenville Health System offers patients a network of clinical integration, expertise and technologies through its six medical campuses, tertiary medical centre, research and education facilities, community hospitals, physician practices and numerous speciality services.
