The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust in the UK has selected BigHand, a specialist provider of digital dictation, speech understanding and clinical correspondence solutions, to help save time, increase productivity and improve timely delivery of care across the trust.
BigHand’s solution, which is currently being implemented in stages by a select number of clinicians and their secretarial support, is set to gradually replace the trust’s previous analogue dictation solution by spring 2014.
Around 80 clinicians, consultants, registrars and secretaries will use Blackberry handheld mobile devices with BigHand’s digital dictation technology, incorporating 140 users across the trust in total.
Once the initial roll-out is complete, Clatterbridge will begin to introduce BigHand’s Clinic Builder module that integrates with the PAS system to help streamline the dictation and enhance data quality and safety.
The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust head of administrative services Sue Eagle said that Clatterbridge runs a comprehensive network of off-site clinics so it needed something flexible which would enable the administrative staff to turn around clinician’s notes more speedily.
"Using a tape-based method was proving extremely time-consuming whilst the secretary waited for the arrival of the tapes from outlying clinics to then be transcribed," Eagle added.
"With BigHand for BlackBerry’s digital dictation solution it is instantaneous, so the administrative work can begin immediately, improving turnaround times significantly."
BigHand offers general physicians, clinicians, medical secretaries and other staff an intuitive, easy-to-use interface enabling them to easily create, track, transcribe and manage individual workloads.
The technology also gives the option to seamlessly integrate features such as speech recognition, outsourcing or smartphone-based dictation.
The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust is a specialist cancer treatment facility in the UK. It operates across 19 sites in Merseyside and Cheshire with 860 staff.
