Spire Healthcare, a provider of private healthcare with 37 private hospitals throughout the UK, has recently signed an agreement with Elekta to help launch its new radiotherapy service.
Spire currently refers patients needing radiotherapy to other providers; however, the UK’s need for additional radiation oncology capacity compelled it to launch its new radiotherapy service.
Pursuant to the terms of the agreement, Elekta will help in the construction of Spire Healthcare’s first cancer centre in Bristol.
Spire Healthcare business development director Neil McCullough said that it is the right time for the company to develop radiotherapy as a key part of the Spire services portfolio.
"The National Radiotherapy Action Group [NRAG] reports that there is a significant and growing under-provision of radiotherapy services in the UK," McCullough added.
"As the population ages and cancer incidence increases, Spire is committed to offering a high quality, patient-focused, end-to-end cancer care pathway that will now include the very latest radiotherapy technology."
As Spire’s partner, Elekta will enhance the scope and quality of radiation therapy services by providing a comprehensive range of cancer management solutions, including its new Versa HD radiation therapy system.
Elekta will also install an array of advanced products at the new cancer centre, including the MOSAIQ oncology information system, and Elekta Planning Workspace, which includes Oncentra 3D and Monaco treatment planning systems and Atlas-Based Autosegmentation (ABAS).
However, the centerpiece of the facility will be the new Versa HD linear accelerator, which is designed to deliver conventional treatments for a wide range of tumours throughout the body, as well as specialised treatments that require extreme targeting precision.
Its high targeting accuracy is available over a large field-of-view, permitting delivery of high-definition beams to a wide spectrum of complex targets.
Elekta president and CEO Tomas Puusepp said the company is delighted that Spire Healthcare has chosen to partner with Elekta in enhancing the scope and quality of radiation therapy services for cancer patients in the UK.
"Spire’s commitment to the continuous improvement of patient health is inspiring and we hope this is the start of a long and prosperous collaboration," Puusepp added.
Spire Healthcare is a major provider of cancer care in the UK, offering oncology services across 21 of its 38 sites.
