The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the operator of the nation’s largest integrated healthcare system, has awarded a $60m IT contract to Harris, an international communications and information technology company, for the expansion of national healthcare mobility infrastructure.
According to the four-year deal, Harris will design, install and support the wireless infrastructure that provides VA medical centres with voice, video, data, real-time-location-services, and electronic health and other information systems.
In continuation of previous work performed under the first two phases of the project, the VA aims to expand mobile device usage for 112 medical centres and connect healthcare providers to data at any time from any location under the programme.
In the first two phases, Harris deployed wireless networks at 66 sites across the country.
Harris IT Services president Wayne Lucernoni said the company will deliver responsive programme management expertise to build and support 46 more medical sites as part of this large-scale mobility infrastructure.
"We are honoured to continue our partnership with the VA to provide more effective care to veterans around the country," Lucernoni added.
The Harris team includes subcontractors Advanced Management Strategies Group, By Light Professional IT Services, C-CAT, DTREDS, Mason Technologies, and Synaptek.

The US Department of Veterans Affairs provides patient care and federal benefits to veterans and their dependents with more than 1,700 hospitals, clinics, community living centres, domiciliaries, readjustment counselling centres, and other facilities.
