The joint venture (JV) between Watpac Construction and the National Buildplan Group in Australia has secured a A$65m ($67.5m) contract to construct the Port Macquarie Base hospital expansion project in New South Wales (NSW).

The 50-50 Watpac National Buildplan Port Macquarie Base Hospital Main Works Project JV will begin work immediately, with completion scheduled for mid 2014.

"The joint venture has strong links with the local community and intends to utilise local subcontractors and suppliers wherever possible."

The project includes building a new four-storey clinical extension and an additional delivery and service yard. The expansion will feature an ICU, pediatrics and emergency departments, and new operating theatres.

Watpac Construction NSW state manager Ric Wang said the project offers an opportunity to assist with the delivery of a vital piece of social infrastructure, and represents a significant milestone for the company.

"The Port Macquarie Base Hospital Expansion Project is a key development for the region and the state, and we are extremely pleased that our joint venture bid with National Buildplan Group has been successful," Wang said.

"The joint venture has strong links with the local community and intends to utilise local subcontractors and suppliers wherever possible."

The expansion will enable the health centre to offer enhanced capacity, improved facilities and a wider range of services.

National Buildplan Group CEO Bill Wheeler said, "As a key provider of health infrastructure in NSW for more than 15 years, we are delighted to be working on this particular project with Watpac Construction in one of our local areas."
